BIG RED OIL LIGHT Kit

Do you race, track or DE your Porsche 911/912?
Do you really understand how important oil pressure is to your motor?
Can you REALLY see your oil pressure light from behind the steering wheel?

We have developed a kit for you, to make that all important Oil Pressure Light very visible.

Everything you need to install the light is included in the kit.
- Big Red Light and wiring harness
- Ty-wrap to secure the clock wiring
- 2 wire taps to connect to the factory oil light

Tools you will need
Screwdriver to pry out gauges
Pliers
Wire Cutter
Electrical Tape
Optional - Silicon Spray

Installation is very easy.  The biggest issue most people have is removing the gauges for the first time.
This can be a bit of work on certain model years.
It takes some patience, but they will come out without damage to the guages.  Go slowly.
You may want to cover the work areas with a few layers of masking tape for protection against chipping, rub mark, etc.

This is where you are starting from.  Estimated install is 20 minutes if you have no trouble removing your gauges.

Step 1 -  DISCONNECT THE GROUND FROM YOUR BATTERY.   Next, Remove clock. Remove connections from the back of the clock.  Black wire is 12v and is always hot. Wrap this connector in electrical tape so it doesn't short against the body of the car.  Brown wire is ground.  Remove the light from the clock and remove the bulb.  Save the bulb for use in other gauge lights.  Wrap the open end of the light socket in tape. Now using the ty-wrap, secure the two wires and light socket to the harness behind the clock.

Step 2 - You will need to remove the gauge with the Oil Pressure light and Speedometer. Pulling the tach forward will give you room to pass the wiring behind it.  This may take some time.

Step 3 - Remove the Oil Pressure Light from the gauge.  There is a red wire and a green wire.   Using the wire taps, connect the green wire from the Big Red Light to the green Oil Pressure wire. Do the same for the red wire.

NOTE:  I have had some reports that the wire colors are not red and green on very early 911s.  The oil pressure light has two wires, there is no polarity issues with the light.  Be sure you are connecting to the oil pressure light and not the generator/alternator light.

Looking at the wire taps, the thru hole is where the factory wire goes. The top hole is for the Big Red Light wire. Squeeze the metal tab with the pliers to make the tap. Snap the attached cover over the metal tab.

Insert the gauge light back into the gauge housing.

Step 5 - Run the Big Red Light wire harness behind the gauges to the clock hole.  Press the blue connector into the socket on the back of the light.  You will find a wire in the edge of the rubber mounting bushing.  This helps provide a better fit in the clock hole.  If your leather does not wrap into the hole, as in the picture, you might want to cover the exposed painted edge with black permanent marker to match the leather. Carefully work the bushing into the clock hole.  The fit is not as tight as the clock, but the fit holds the light firmly.  See notes below if you are having fit issues.

Step 6 - Lightly press the oil pressure gauge back in the hole. Bring the ignition key to the run position.  The oil pressure light should be lit and the Big Red Light should also be lit.  Start the car.  Both lights should go out when oil pressure is built up.

Step 7 - Press all the gauge clusters back in.  You might want to reorient the gauges so that they are more visible when you are on the track. See pictures.  Also, you might want to use some silicon spray on the rubber bushings around the gauges.  Spray some silicon on a paper towel. Carefully wipe the sides of the rubber bushings with a light coat.  This will make inserting and removing the gauges much easier in the future.

Congratulations! You have completed the install and now have a highly visible warning light in case you lose oil pressure.

Additional Notes:

On older 911s, it has been reported on '70s models, without the vinyl or leather on the gauge cluster face, the light does not fit snugly in the opening. You may need to "use the serrated rubber ring from your clock on the new oil pressure light".  Another option is to try a larger gauge wire in the rim of the rubber bushing.

Here is what people are saying about the kit.

Hello, just wanted to thank you for the warning light. Payment/Ship time A++. Install took about 10 minutes, directions were great, functions perfectly. Seal fit very snugly in my 87, almost too tight, had to remove the black wire in the seal. Also, my 87 had two green wires and one red. I just plugged the two greens into the connector and was done. Thanks again for a great product, dont think I will ever miss that light if it turns on. Bright enough to cause sunburn! Happy New Year, Keith
